All teams are currently preparing their participation at the 24 hours iLumen European Solar Challenge. During the next weeks, each team will be presented on the iESC website. Today we introduce you the German Thyssen Krupp Sunriser team from Bochum.
“Our team consists of 60 students from different faculties assigned to 8 expert teams: mechanics, electronics, engine, strategy, organisation, sustainability, and media”; explains team member Svea Michardt. “Last year we finished third at the World Solar Challenge in Australia.”
“During the last 15 years, Hochschule Bochum created seven electric vehicles, driven by solar energy. The range of models includes three models with official authorisation for road use.”
“The Thyssenkrupp SunRiser was built by Bochum University of Applied Sciences in a research cooperation with Thyssenkrupp in 2014. Its dimensions are 4.000 x 1.800 x 1.125 mm. What makes the car really special is the multi-materiality (wood, steel, carbon and magnesium amongst things) that is used to develop the carbon fibre light weight sports car design.”
The Thyssen Krupp Sunriser team is very happy to be back at Circuit Zolder, where they entered the iESC of 2014. “We participated with our previous model, the PowerCore SunCruiser, so we are familiar with the track. The Zolder Circuit is a demanding and diverse circuit being fun to drive on.”
The iESC 2016 edition differs a lot from the previous one. “The 24 hour race provides similar conditions as the WSC, hence the teams areconfronted with a more extensive effort especially regarding the strategy and driving by night. It will be difficult to beat the Tesla, but we consider it to be possible. We believe in our car and in our highly motivated team. Our goal is a good ranking, without any incidents.”
“The ilumen European Solar Challenge is a unique event in Europe and the first 24 hour race for SolarCars to participate. It is a great opportunity to explore the world of sustainable electric mobility and to watch the ultimate challenge between SolarCars and a Tesla.
